A new love for an old enemy

March 26, 2010

I tend to get impatient when I know the end is near. Last year at this time, I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but I was still shooting with a Canon Rebel. There are a lot of nice Rebels out there, but mine was a bargain at Wal-Mart for $500. We’re not talking high-class by any means. A friend sold me her Canon 30d and what an upgrade. It was the first time I felt like a professional and I was so excited to shoot with that camera, but my skills increased at a rapid rate and I quickly outgrew the camera. In fact, my poor mother had to hear about its ridiculous noise level after every event (noise=grain in a photo). Once I determined I was going to buy a new camera, I began to loath my camera. I know this sounds pretty harsh...but I had to wait 6 months for my new camera to be released and I was becoming impatient.

Shortly before Christmas, I took my 30d out on a rollerskating escapade with friends. My husband is a rollerskating superstar and I’m lucky if I don’t fall at least once before the night is over so shooting with my camera at my 5mph pace sounded fun. It took a few photos before I realized the low light in the rink wasn’t going to jive with my camera and of course, I started to dream of smashing it to pieces with a shovel.

I hadn’t touched my 30d in months and just last week decided to post these photos for friends. After viewing a few shots, I couldn’t believe my eyes. The grain and lack of clarity actually gave the photos a vintage feel and well....I thought they looked pretty cool! Could my 30d be used for a nostalgic look in the future? Hmmm...maybe it wasn’t such a bad camera after all. In fact, I think I’m in love with it again. :D

Kate: (03.29.10 - 11:40 am) I think great expensive cameras are nice and at times a necessity --- but what's important at the end of the day for most people is the picture quality and the shots captured. If you could get great shots with a pinhole camera, that's all that matters to me! :-)

Deanna: (04.06.10 - 2:36 pm) A pinhole, eh? Maybe I'll try using one for your first kiss so it lasts longer! jk

Neil Cowley: (04.07.10 - 10:25 am) that's so fun, I've been taking my kids to the local rink over the winter - gets them out and moving!

Kate: (04.15.10 - 11:29 am) LOL!

Vintage Wedding Hairstyles to Dye For!

January 04, 2010

Hehe...that title makes me laugh.

So one of my new year’s resolutions is to blog more frequently. I ended 2009 and started 2010 by photographing a wedding on New Year’s Eve a few days ago so I had wedding on my brain and of course I love these crazy events of love! I totally miss the planning and scrapbook of ideas, so here it will be: my new scrapbook of all things wedding that I think are fabulous.

And to start it off is this amazing book I received from my parents for Christmas titled Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles with Step-by-Step Techniques by Lauren Rennells. Oh my goodness, I LOVE this book. I’m obsessed with vintage hairstyles for everyday wear, but this book is totally perfect for the bride who wants to try their own vintage look. And when the book says it’s step-by-step, it ain’t kidding. The photographs and directions make each hairstyle incredibly easy to understand.

I’ll be honest, these styles aren’t something you can whip up on the first try and look amazing. Placing and positioning curls of the 40s and 50s took a lot of work and practice, but if you are like me, it’s something I bet many brides would be interested in learning. I personally had a hairdresser create my vintage look from an old photograph of Rita Hayworth, but I wish I had owned this book to offer even more options with little effort.

I even love the photographs of the models in this book because the makeup, clothes and accessories are so fantastic for each style. In my opinion the styles are perfect for brides looking to create looks from the 20s to the 60s, whether with short or long hair. I’m going to be attempting some of these looks on myself so I’ll post the results if I pull one off, but I’m not kidding when I say to vintage brides : BUY THIS BOOK NOW!
